Weekly DoE/AotZ Concept Art Session #5: Tornne - Part 1

Weekly DoE/AotZ Concept Art Session #5

It's our fifth session everyone, so I thought we should do something a little different! Sessions 5 and 6 will focus on Tornne - the mighty barbarian and later wielder of the dread blade, The Black Lantern.

In this exercise, participants create their rendition of the selected character within one week. There are no restrictions on quality or medium (although obviously anything that violates the rules of the forum will be deleted). Participants are encouraged to create new work for this exercise, rather than posting old work. The image provided is a reference only, don't feel limited by any of the details. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. Above all, have fun everyone!

This week, our theme will be Tornne the Barbarian, mighty and unstoppable; Tornne before taking up The Black Lantern.
Tornne
Barbarian Chieftain

998; The Crossing
998 AE (After Exodus)

There alone, surrounded by hundreds of creatures with odd clubs and eyes as lightless as the grave, stood a single man covered in blood. Every attempt the creatures made to advance and overtake the barbarian resulted in failure.

Azzr had been leading the Bane across the northwestern plains, overtaking the barbarian tribes located in the area as he went. This tribe's leader now stood before them, ever defiant in permitting his own demise...

The session begins now and finishes next Tuesday (U.S. time, it's Wednesday here). Extra time has been allotted this week since the thread is up late. No exact time as it is not a contest, rather an exercise. Post your images in this thread, work in progress shots are always encouraged xD

Tornne? This is unheard of! Not really... Since I'm already drawing... Mighty Pre-Black Lantern, prepare to be damned by my hellish mechanical pencil!

I've got 3 versions all very serious and very flawed. One is him in a more barbaric form, the other 2 have him very sickened and tired, the effects of the Lantern I guess.

My only qualm is that he looks really young in your pictures. Tornne is a pretty elderly dude, but not really old. I'd put him in his 40s. In the barbarian tribes, the more you take out the more renowned you are, which is why the strongest guys typically are the oldest and most war-torned of veterans.

Good job, though. My favorite is the first, even if it portrays him a little too young. :p

Forties? I suppose that makes sense because I believe Spartan soldiers retired at 30 but stayed in reserves until 60. Retiring age from soldiering seems to fluctuate in other cultures but is probably between 30 and 60 for 90% of them.

I think the original Conan movie with Darth Vader and the Terminator roughly show the ages that veteran soldiers and "over the hill" soldiers are; and they fight at about the same level anyway. It really depends on the situation though, I mean we could gloss over hundreds of examples or just accept your universe. <3

Not a barbarian really but he looks diseased and likens to some sort of dark knight. It could sort of be that one horseman of disease.
