Thailand Pulls Grand Theft Auto After Murder

Post by assassingao » Tue Aug 05, 2008 1:24 pm

Sales of Grand Theft Auto have been halted in Thailand. On Monday, a teenager confessed to robbing and murdering a taxi driver in attempts to recreate a scene from GTA reports Reuters. The game's Thai distributor is pulling GTA from Thai game shops and replacing them with other games.

This is truly absurd.

That or the government are willing to blame games.

Their stupidity never failed to amaze me, honestly.

Next time, let's kill 20+ guys and says that "I'm inspired by the Matrix", or the lord of the rings, harry potter...the list goes on...

At least criminals here are smart enough not to blame games, and the government doesn't always believe them. I wish the same could be said for less technologically savvy nations out there. "Blame the new, strange imports from the Americas/Japan!"

The news always has games to blame, so it's not likely that they'll let it go.

Man, if it was DotA, there might be cases of someone blindfolding himself, using dual-bladed sword to kill all passengers in a bus. And I'd believe him completely then.

Taking from the Control Alt Delete news archive

Police said the youth, an obsessive player of "Grand Theft Auto", showed no sign of mental problems during questioning and had confessed to committing the crime because of the game.'

What? Really? Am I the only one who thinks it's a sign of mental problems the instant he decided to rob and kill a cab driver, game or no game? I mean there are people who manage to live their entire lives without killing someone else, no matter how many movies they've watched, games they've played, comic books they've read, or death metal they've listened to. So doesn't it stand to reason that perhaps something was just broken in this kid to begin with?

Need I quote more?
Internet: Fitness videogames might be able to keep players in shape--but not if they don't play them.

Ditto, but they'd probably blame the other stations. ~_~
