Virtual Haircut

Post by Rising_Dusk » Sat Sep 26, 2009 6:02 pm

This is a virtual barbershop. It's awesome and works great. Just close your eyes with your headphones on, listen to it, and you'll see what I mean.

Important:
  • You must use your earphones and close your eyes to get the effect to work.

Actually you don't need to close your eyes for the effect to work. And yeah the whisper totally got me; I was frickin' terrified.

Seriously I wonder why there isn't a horror game that exploits this mechanic.

So? They aren't really expensive and are often common place.

Worst case scenario you can fall back to surround system or plain 2.1.

Just saying that requirement for headphones isn't much of a barrier to enter.

So are a lot of things, but it doesn't mean people are willing to get it.

True, still I find it hard to believe that there isn't a horror game that uses/exploits that effect. It really wouldn't have to be a hard requirement (as you can default to surround system or even a 2.1 system).

The effect gets really distorted from speakers, actually. For instance, at my computer setup, I hear strange echoes listening to the haircut. It really only works for me with headphones.

Yeah but you could use effect on headphones only and make a special use case when surround sound option is present (using surround sound option of generating 3d sound). If there are just 2.1 speakers you could turn the effect off.

I feel this discussion is going off topic so here are Top 10 sound illusions.
