So I Interviewed Dusk the other week...

Post by Softmints » Fri Jan 31, 2014 6:57 am

Dusk was kind enough to grant me an interview earlier this month, which you can peruse at your leisure here. We talk about the early days of VZ, AotZ & DoE, and a bit about the commercial mobas too.

I figure if any of you are dropping in on a nostalgia visit, this kind of thing would be up your alley. Enjoy ;)

I figured he may ask them if he ever gets around to interviewing about the maps themselves. ;)

I'm kinda surprised that he didn't do a review of AotZ/DoE. Or that he didn't describe Tides of Blood, or EotA, which all had some amazing ideas.

EotA had some really cool very cool heroes, but horrible map coding, that leaked all over the place. I really enjoyed the Illidan character that planted obelisks around map and could use them to increase his blink range. In fact if he built a network of towers and increased his blink, he could essentially travel around the map for free. It basically extended his blink from large to map wide, but required skill and map control to maintain. I think it was essentially a really cool take on a new class of builder-like heroes.

I decided to start with the older era of maps (~2004), because they're less complex and easier to review. The more famous maps demand more careful attention, so I wanted to make sure I was familiar with my format and goals before tackling them. In time, I aim to cover just about every noteworthy AoS there is, all of the above included (further suggestions welcome).

Great to hear. I'm actually looking forward to it. EotA doesn't give enough credit, but it had some interesting designs, combined with atrocious execution. The combo I liked best about EotA (making obelisks everywhere and using Strafe for global map teleport) was also the glitchiest...

I quite enjoyed this interview. :) It was very nostalgic! Looking forward to more AoS documentation.

For history's sake! We may as well document the origins of the MOBA genre. :)
