This place was made by the Deathand, and the Deathand keeps it. Open to those who have no qualms about talking chances, or enjoy a good competition. Haven holds events for users to gain Operator Points for use of Favor, or a trick or two. Who knows...you might even get inducted into the Order of Secrets...

Consider the last thread just a glorified signup for the Angband marathon. This is the real deal.

Angband Marathon

  • Bartold, Gnome Mage. Dead. 8 OP.

Current Challenge: The Culling
  • Double or Nothing - Required (4 OP) - Reach level six.
  • Downward Trek -Required (2 OP) - Reach the sixth floor.
  • Racism - Optional (2 OP) - Kill at least 15 monsters in any one monster group.
  • Farm Upstate - Optional (2 OP) - Kill Farmer Maggot's dogs Grip and Fang.

Ongoing Challenges:
  • "MY PRECIOUS!" - Kill Smeagol. (10 OP)

The optional two require verification by screenshot. The key sequence is ~ 4. You'll need to take 2 screenshots (unless you've killed 15 or more uniques, in which case, what the ****.)

The rules of the marathon are a bit different now that we don't take sign-ups anymore.

Firstly, I've changed my mind about something. In order to keep the dramatic feel, you cannot have a new character enter when you die. I think the flavor of a marathon will be enhanced if the numbers slowly dwindle down.

However, because of this, there is no more level cap. You can go as far ahead as you like, and your graveyard dump will qualify posthumously for depth/level awards. However, since some challenges require screen shots, it's in your best interest not to play ahead too far. Just mess around on an alt.

If you die, MAKE SURE YOU POST YOUR GRAVEYARD DUMP. Then it'll be here on the record and I'll know to cross your name off the list.

So, get started on the next challange. Oh, and use code tags. I agree with whoever brought that up, they're a lot nicer.

Also, because there's no level cap, post a file dump as soon as you meet every required challenge. Then, you can go back and earn the optional and post. But, please, just edit your post with the screenshots rather than posting another dump. I just start from the top of the thread and go straight down when I award points, so don't worry.

Btw, I'm no longer posting logs until my graveyard dump. So you don't know how far ahead Elo is and you can't game the system trying to guess what challenges are next. Know that if I post a challenge I've already met all of the conditions (req. and optional). When I die, the leader will have to hold to the same standard.

Also, for archival purposes, I'm gonna post the first two challenges in the thread, so when I change the first post they'll stay.

First Challenge: Meet N' Greet

  • Knows Which End is the Pointy One - Required (2 OP) - Reach level 3.
  • Knows which End is Down - Required (1 OP) - Reach the third floor.
  • Disregard for Personal Health - Optional (1 OP) - Quaff a unknown effect potion and post the color/effect correlation.
Second Challenge: The Culling
  • Double or Nothing - Required (4 OP) - Reach level six.
  • Downward Trek -Required (2 OP) - Reach the sixth floor.

I had a run in with a legion of lice, Grip was one of the first monsters I killed, and Fang fell shortly after.

Well, nevermind forgetting me. Bartold's ded. He died, after using up his torches and getting surrounded by hill orcs. The stupid gnome didn't learn the spells by heart and couldn't read them. Btw, don't Gnomes have 40 feet infravision? Anyway, game over, after you all die (but looking at the warriors with 100+ hp, it won't happen fast), I hope for some new game ;) Good luck.

Andreijj, sorry for forgetting you. I updated the first post and gave you the 8 OP you earned.

These two deaths were really instructive of a couple basic principles that will help you play Angband.

1. Don't run out of food or light.

2. Cave spiders suck.

Also, it's looking like dropping floors is harder than dropping levels now. I'll keep that into account when I make the OP awards.

Alright, since we're supposed to go to floor 6, I want to up the anty a bit. I have added a bonus objective that may be achieved during this or any future adventure to the first post. (That means after we pass the L6/F6 thing you can still do it)

Personally I planned on skipping Smeagol because it's so bloody hard to pin the thing down. You should make it Bullroarer or Lagduf or someone who WON'T run. xD

Those dudes you mentioned are gonna get creamed (or kill you) no matter what you do, Smeagol is just rewarding to eviscerate.
